I was born and raised in Chicago, attended college at the University of Michigan, and did graduate work in economics at Harvard University. I’ve been at Princeton since the mid 1970s. In recent years, I’ve taught undergraduate courses in public finance and introductory microeconomics, and graduate courses in public finance. From 1989 to 1991 my audience changed from Princeton students to federal government policy makers, when I served in the US Treasury as Deputy Assistant Secretary (Tax Analysis). During a second stint in Washington, from 2003 to 2005, I served on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, first as a member, and then as chairman. As far as hobbies, I enjoy jogging (very slowly) along the tow path and cooking. My wife, Marsha Novick, is a partner in a local law firm. We have two children, both of whom attended Princeton. Neither Lynne (’03) nor Jonathan (’05) took a single economics course while they were here. I think that there may be a message there.

Welcome to Whitman College! I look forward to working with all of you this year. Originally from Maine, I came to Princeton first as a graduate student in French literature and film. After completing the Ph.D., I taught at the University of Michigan and at Haverford College, returning to Princeton in 2003 to join the administrative staff in the residential colleges. My main scholarly interests are late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century literature, cinema studies, and literary/filmic representation of technology. I live in Princeton with my husband, Ahmet Bayazitoglu, and our two boys: five-year old Osman (a.k.a Ozzie), and his little brother Emre. Ahmet, originally from Turkey, recently completed law school and is practicing law in NYC. Ozzie is getting a degree in mischief, and you will often see him careening around Community Hall with soft-serve ice cream. Emre is still only crawling around Community Hall. The four of us are usually found having leisurely dinners with friends and taking walks along the Delaware-Raritan canal. In my free time (what there is of it!), I enjoy practicing yoga and reading current fiction. I encourage all of you to come by our offices in North Hall and get to know our fantastic college staff; my door is always open.

As the Director of Studies, I am responsible for the academic progress and support of Whitman students. I oversee the faculty adviser program for freshmen and sophomores, and I am available to all students for individual advising on academic, administrative, and personal issues. I direct the Major Choices programming here at Whitman, working with the following departments in 2009-10: German, Mathematics, Music, Economics, and Slavic Languages and Literatures. Building our intellectual community is also one of my responsibilities, and if you have ideas about events you’d like to see here, I encourage you to share those ideas with me. I came to Princeton from Harvard University, where I served as the Allston Burr Resident Dean of Currier House and taught in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. I completed my Ph.D. in the Slavic Department here at Princeton, and I teach in that department when time allows (my research and teaching interests are in Russian and Czech literatures of the 19th and 20th centuries). Drama is one of my specialties, and I enjoy seeing all types of theater – including student productions. I’ve spent a good amount of time in Russia and Eastern Europe, and I’m always eager to travel to new places and return to old favorites. I grew up in rural Utah, not far from the Wyoming and Idaho borders, and I still love camping, mountains, and open space. I also enjoy dinner parties (more as a guest than as a host!), newspapers and magazines (in print and online), old furniture (everything from American Eastlake to Danish Modern), and many types of music (even country).

I am excited to be on the Whitman College team! I am a “Jersey Girl”, born and raised in Willingboro. I began my career in Residence Life right down the road as a Community Advisor (CA) at The College of New Jersey. After graduating with a degree in English, I went off to study Student Affairs Administration at Michigan State University (GO GREEN!) While at MSU I developed a passion for social justice and diversity education, and learned the importance of advocating for students. I left the Midwest and continued to work in Residence Life at Syracuse University, The University of Vermont, and Temple University. Along the way, I discovered the joys of teaching both undergraduate and graduate students, and advising student leaders. When I’m not in the office, you can usually find me enjoying some form of theater, a sporting event, listening to music, or curled up with a good book at Starbucks. I also enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and Netflix. I have a large amount of pop culture knowledge stored away, so feel free to try and stump me! I am thrilled to be back in the Princeton area and to be working with the RCAs and College Council.

I come to Whitman from Princeton University's Office of Information Technology (OIT), where I have spent more than six years managing the Administrative Systems Help Desk. In this role, I served and assisted all members of the University community, including faculty, staff and students, with questions about the University Business Applications. Prior to my employment in OIT, I worked as a graduate and undergraduate administrator for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Here, I worked primarily with and for the students, which is what I have found I love most. I am thrilled to be working at Whitman and once again supporting Princeton's students. When I'm not at Whitman I can be found at Rider University, taking classes and studying for my Masters Degree in Organizational Leadership. Outside of work and school, I love traveling, reading, baking and walking on the canal. My office will always be fully stocked with homemade cookies and dark chocolate M&Ms. I encourage you to stop by to say 'Hi,' or to take the edge off that chocolate craving. My door and candy jar are always open.

Welcome Freshman! This is my third year at Princeton. Prior to coming here I worked the last 22 years in “garmento” for a large manufacturing company, Jones Apparel Group, as a Production Coordinator. I have been married to my husband Bob for 22 years. We have a busy 16 year old daughter- Amanda. She plays field hockey, sings in the school choir, and is a member of Venture Crew #99, when she is not on Facebook. We also have a 6 yr. old golden retriever named Dakota and a kitten named Lily. I love- cooking dinner for friends, working on my house, floating in the pool with a Mojito in my hand, walking in the park with the dogs, and summers in Chincoteague, Virginia. If you find yourself living in Whitman- consider yourself extremely fortunate. We have the most caring and committed staff here, but I can honestly say that sentiment extends to the University at large. I have met so many wonderful people (on every level) who could not have been more helpful and welcoming. I am confident that you will find that to be true as well. Come see me in the college office if you need some chocolate. Looking forward to another great year at Whitman.
